Customloper: The Long Dark Challenge That Outlasted the Challenge
For the past 6–7 months, I’ve been running a custom difficulty mode in The Long Dark. The goal was simple: I wanted to keep the spirit of Voyageur—but with a dose of Stalker and a blast of Interloper.. After testing and tweaking, here’s where I landed: Voyageur-level of loot – because scrounging should feel rewarding Wildlife set between Voyageur and Stalker – you’re not safe, but you’re not…

So being a "live" author rather than "write it all up, publish, and come what may" type author, do you ever take reader commentary into consideration? Like I imagine for sure nothing that'd change the story per se, but if people expressed that they liked the exposition for example, do you feel driven to maybe put a little more whenever it fits?
No. The story gets what the story needs; if the readers like a lot of something then I make notes for the next story so that I can (if I choose to do so) design a story with more of that from the start. Being a 'live' author gives very little room for direction, theme or basic structure and tone changes because you can't go back and rewrite published chapters. Spent too much time taking the audience into account will turn you into one of those tv writers who spend too much time reading about their own show on twitter and end up writing a mess as a result.
I keep an eye on the reactions as an educational tool; did this elicit the kind of reactions that I wanted? Is the audience exhibiting the sort of discussions that I expected? If not, why not? That data is used to improve my craft. For the story in progress, the main thing I'm checking for is comprehension. Does the audience sufficiently understand the plot and setting? Is there something they're wildly misunderstanding? That's the one thing that does change how I write the story in progress; some misunderstanding is normal (the audience will usually have some people who understand something explain it to the people who don't), but if everybody's misunderstanding or forgetting something basic, it means I've communicated it incorrectly and need to communicate it again before it becomes plot critical. Checking the live reactions is also a good way to skim for minor plot holes and ensure that your twists are at the level of predictability you want. You want a small number of people to guess each twist in advance; this shows that you have correctly seeded the pieces and it's not coming out of absolutely nowhere. If a very large proportion of the audience is guessing a twist, then it's not a twist, it's a revelation for the character, which is perfectly fine and YOU SHOULD NOT ALTER IT, THEN IT'S A MESS COMING OUT OF NOWHERE, YOU'RE NOT IN COMPETITION WITH YOUR AUDIENCE OH MY GOD TV WRITERS GET OFF TWITTER, but it's handy to know which one you're writing in advance.

Your Future Partner
Paid Readings | Ko-Fi
This is meant to be a fun, general reading, so it may not resonate with everyone. Take what resonates for you and leave the rest behind! Please take a moment to breathe, focus on your intuition, and choose the photo that calls to you. Each holds a unique message for you!

𐙚 • 𝑃𝑖𝑙𝑒 1
Your future partner is someone who brings a sense of hope, renewal, and inspiration into your life. They're likely to come into your world when you're healing or stepping into a more authentic version of yourself. This person carries a calming presence and seems to ignite a quiet optimism in you, as if things are finally aligning after a period of uncertainty or difficulty. They're drawn to your inner light and may even reflect that light back at you, encouraging personal growth and emotional clarity.
They likely avoid unnecessary conflict and prefer peace over chaos. Their presence suggests a breath of fresh air in your romantic experiences—someone who isn't here to play games or stir up drama. Past relationship patterns or internal struggles that once caused you stress begin to settle in their presence. This is someone who chooses communication over avoidance and is mature enough to let go of power struggles, making them emotionally supportive and level-headed.
Initially, there might be a hesitancy or emotional block on your end, perhaps due to past heartbreak or a fear of making the wrong choice again. But this person’s clear intentions and decisive nature will help you see things more clearly. Their actions will speak loudly, and they’ll show you that love doesn't have to come with confusion. You'll begin to trust yourself more around them, and that clarity will make it easier for you to open up.
They are intelligent, assertive, and driven—likely someone who charges forward when they know what they want. They might have a bold personality or a quick wit, and they’re not afraid to speak the truth. This person values honesty and progress, and once they decide to pursue you, they’ll do so with purpose. The connection may progress quickly once it starts, carried by strong communication and mutual respect. This person enters your life like a gust of wind—clearing the fog and pushing both of you toward something meaningful and transformative.
𐙚 • 𝑃𝑖𝑙𝑒 2
Your future partner is likely someone who has recently come out of a period of isolation or deep introspection. They may have gone through a transformative experience that forced them to confront their inner world and now they’re ready to step back into life, more self-aware and open. This person may have previously struggled with indecision or being stuck in their ways but is now making an intentional effort to take control of their life and act with purpose.
They are charismatic, skilled, and driven—someone who knows how to use the tools at their disposal to create opportunities and make things happen. There’s a sense of passionate energy around them, like they’re on the verge of starting something exciting, whether it’s a creative pursuit, a new project, or even a fresh chapter in life. This person will bring a spark into your world, not just emotionally but also through shared experiences and dynamic energy.
There’s also a feeling of wholeness and completion surrounding this future connection. This person may have traveled a long personal journey to get where they are, and now they’re ready to share their life with someone who can match their energy and growth. Your relationship with them will likely feel like the closing of an old chapter and the beginning of a new, meaningful one—with potential for long-term harmony, success, and mutual expansion.
𐙚 • 𝑃𝑖𝑙𝑒 3
Your future partner may initially come across as someone who has struggled with trust, communication, or immaturity in the past. They might have gone through a period of confusion, overthinking, or being unsure about their direction in life. This could stem from lessons they had to learn the hard way—perhaps from saying too much, too little, or not knowing how to navigate emotional conversations. When you meet them, they might still be healing from past experiences that shaped their perspective on love and connection.
They carry a deep emotional scar—perhaps from heartbreak or betrayal—that has forced them to confront their own vulnerabilities. This pain, while still present, has molded them into someone more self-aware and introspective. They're not looking for surface-level affection. Instead, they’re seeking something that brings balance, truth, and fairness into their life. They're serious about love and are ready to approach it with a sense of responsibility and integrity.
When they come into your life, the connection will feel undeniably strong. It’s not just romantic but deeply soulful, something that aligns with your values and your heart. There’s a feeling of choice and commitment between you both, one where mutual respect and emotional honesty play a big role. This person won’t shy away from showing you how much they care or from stepping into something meaningful with you.
They’re also generous—not just with time or resources, but with emotional effort and energy. This person values equality in relationships and wants to give just as much as they receive. They’re someone who believes love is a two-way street, and they’ll make sure you feel valued and supported. Their journey hasn't been easy, but it’s made them someone capable of deep, sincere love—ready to build something real with you.

"India's efforts and progress in reducing preventable child deaths have been lauded as an "exemplar" by the United Nations, which cited the example of health initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, and said the country has saved millions of young lives through strategic investments in its health system.
The United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation report, released Tuesday, cited the example of five “exemplar countries” in achieving child mortality reduction -- India, Nepal, Senegal, Ghana and Burundi -- highlighting diverse strategies that have accelerated progress in reducing preventable child deaths.
The report said these countries illustrate that with "political will, evidence-based strategies and sustained investments, even resource-constrained settings facing unique challenges can achieve substantial reductions in mortality, bringing the world closer to an end to preventable child deaths".
On India, the report said the country has made gains through health system investment...
The report highlighted that since 2000, India achieved an under-five mortality reduction of 70 per cent and a neonatal mortality reduction of 61 per cent, “driven by overlapping measures to increase health coverage, enhance available interventions and develop health infrastructure and human resources", the report said.
It cited the example of Ayushman Bharat, the world's largest health insurance scheme which provides annual coverage of nearly USD 5,500 per family per year.
It noted that every pregnant woman is entitled to free delivery (including caesarean section), and infant care provides free transport, medications, diagnostics and dietary support in public health institutions.
To ensure comprehensive coverage and equitable access to health services, India has strengthened infrastructure via the establishment of maternity waiting homes, maternal and child health wings, newborn stabilisation units, sick newborn care units, mother care units and a dedicated programme for birth defect screening, the report said...
“This ensures millions of healthy pregnancies and thriving live births each year. India has also prioritised the training and deployment of skilled birth attendants, such as midwives and community health workers, to provide appropriate maternal and child health services,” it said.
The report noted that additionally, data systems and digital surveillance of maternal, newborn and child health indicators are continuously improved to support evidence-based decision-making...
Other Countries that Did Well
The UN agency also said that several low and lower-middle-income countries have surpassed the global decline in under-five mortality since 2000.
Angola, Bhutan, Bolivia, Cabo Verde, India, Morocco, Senegal, Tanzania and Zambia have all cut their under-five mortality rate by more than two thirds since 2000.
In 2000, the country with the highest burden of under-five measles mortality was India, with only 56 per cent of infants vaccinated for measles and 189,000 deaths from measles.
By 2023, the infant measles vaccination rate had increased to 93 per cent, and under-five deaths due to the disease decreased by 97 per cent to 5,200 measles-related deaths...
Since 2000, child deaths [globally] have dropped by more than half and stillbirths by over a third, fuelled by sustained investments in child survival worldwide...
"Millions of children are alive today because of the global commitment to proven interventions, such as vaccines, nutrition, and access to safe water and basic sanitation,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said.

I do Not write video game analysis. However, one thing that I loved about Veilguard that I hadn’t seen people talking about, is that all the companions personal quests mirror Solas’s regrets.
Like Taash is struggling with their mom and identity and what to choose to be in their future. Do they be what someone else wants them to or make their own identity?
Emmrich is trying to deal with a fear of death and if sacrificing the things he loves is worth is for a better future. What’s the cost of never having to experience your greatest figure worth to you?
Davrin’s trying to figure out how to live when he’s always expected he would die. The duty he’s pledged himself to vs following his own nature. Should you sacrifice your life for the duty and happiness of others?
Bellara’s both dealing with the regret of not doing enough to prevent her brothers death, but also trying to decide if progress is worth the price it came at. How do you forgive yourself for your sins and carve a new path forward?
Neve is trying to be a good person in a system literally built for people like her while she has immense amounts of privilege. Do people need someone who will do anything for them? Or do they need a hero to look up to?
Lucanis is figuring out how to deal with the betrayal of someone who you not only trusted, but was your family. The closest person to you. At what point is family who hurt you no longer worth your forgiveness?
Harding is trying to both honor but let go of the trauma and create a future in light of that hurt. How do you create a future despite the trauma of your past?
And Rook! Rook’s entire thing is that they’re self-isolating. They never talk to any of their companions about their stress… except they do talk to Solas, the Inquisitor, and Varric, people who all have power or they see as their leader. They’re actively trying to withdraw from their community and take on whatever mistakes the team makes and whatever consequences will arise from the conclusions of the companions missions.
And this is all wildly clever thing because it creates a really effective way of commenting on Solas and his issues. This is not to say that they were crafted solely to comment on Solas, or to be pale imitations, but by making them have similar regrets and problems to him, it provides this really fantastic bit in the narrative, especially during the team meetups to discuss the murals, where they’re really able to both relate to, or disagree with Solas in some interesting ways because of their issues. It also makes the story much tighter than it would be otherwise, because nothing in this story doesn’t serve this very character-driven narrative about the choices, guilt, and fear and how that hampers or helps your decision making. And I really like it! You can see it in their dialogue around the murals too. Taash for instance specifically talks about the regret of not being able to tell someone you love stuff because you waited too long and now they’re dead. 10/10 bit of character introspection.

12th House Synastry and the Blockages Faced in the Relationship (Planet Overlays)
materialist🔖
DISCLAIMER‼️: This explanation is mainly from the perspective of the planet person, but the feelings and experiences described might also resonate with the house person. Both sides may find some relevance in these observations. Please note that this focus is solely on the negative outcomes of these synastry placements. There are undoubtedly beautiful and positive elements that can arise from these connections as well so take these with a grain of salt. These are just my personal observations and are meant for entertainment purposes only; it may not resonate with everyone due to the nuances of astrology. Please respect my work and avoid copying or stealing it. Enjoy reading!!
Sun ☀️ : With this synastry, the Sun person feels that their true personality is restricted or blocked. They don’t understand why or how the house person perceives them in a way that is far from who they actually are. Sensing the house person’s apprehension towards them, they might try “switching personalities” to appeal to or be accepted by the house person, driven by a need to please them. The Sun person feels misunderstood and is unsure why the house person doesn’t see them the way they want to be seen. The sun person could also be some sort of enemy disguised as a friend to the house person.
Moon 🌙 : With this synastry, the Moon person’s true feelings and intentions may seem hidden or concealed for various reasons. The Moon person might feel the need to put up a front to appeal to the house person and gain their acceptance. This can also manifest as the Moon person harboring negative feelings towards the house person but pretending to enjoy their company, reflecting the restriction of their true emotions. This dynamic can lead to a lack of genuine emotional connection and increase misunderstandings. A lot of jealousy also comes into play with this synastry
Mercury 🗣️ : As I'm focusing more on the negative side of this synastry, I have to point out that this is a major red flag placement 💀💀. Communication, which is crucial in any relationship, is significantly blocked here. The Mercury person might withhold their thoughts and intentions due to fear of how the house person will react. This could also involve the Mercury person bad-mouthing the house person or even snitching on them, while putting up a front and pretending to be all buddy-buddy with them. With communication being a barrier, this can also manifest as a language barrier or misunderstandings between the two, leading to further communication problems.
Venus 🩵 : Ahh, the planet of love being in the 12th house 😭—very iffy. With this placement, love is literally blocked in this synastry due to unfortunate circumstances. This could mean that the Venus person doesn't know how to be lovey-dovey with the house person and ends up being rude, though in a more playful way, as Venus tends to be gentler. The Venus person might feel that the house person won’t accept their love and as a result starts “teasing” or “playfully bullying” them as a subtler way of expressing themselves. Since the Venus person can’t externally express their love, they turn these feelings inward, leading to the creation of fake scenarios. In these scenarios, they are genuinely expressing their love for the house person, and what plays out in these fake scenarios is what they actually want to portray in real life but are somehow unable to. The venus person also feels that the house person might not understand the way they love and that’s why they end up not expressing themselves openly and that’s where unrequited feelings and love occurs. You will never know unless you try right?
Mars ❤️🔥 : Lmao, this one is the most interesting! As we know, Mars is the planet of initiation and motivation. When Mars falls in the 12th house, it blocks any chance for progression - be it physically, mentally or emotionally. Mars is a very instinctual planet, and being placed in the 12th house can lead to confusion about their true instincts. The Mars person might doubt themselves and try to pull back to avoid overstepping any “boundaries”but the mars person often takes the idea of "overstepping boundaries" a bit too literally and ends up not making any move at all. Contact is blocked. This has to be one of the worst synastries because if contact itself is blocked, how can a relationship even be formed? It blocks all the areas such as the development of love, feelings, communication, etc.
Jupiter 🧿 : This placement is comparatively easygoing, but as we focus on the hindrances in this synastry, it can present some challenges. Jupiter represents expansion and abundance, but when it falls into the 12th house, it amplifies themes related to spirituality, mysticism, spirituality, etc. While one of Jupiter’s natural traits is the art of bringing joy and luck into wherever it lands, this can manifest as the Jupiter person bringing immense joy and luck to the house person. However, the Jupiter person might come across as excessively optimistic, which the house person may find confusing or overwhelming. This difference in outlook can leave the Jupiter person feeling let down because the house person doesn’t share their perspective or beliefs. As a result, the Jupiter person might hold back their optimism and viewpoints to better ‘connect’ with the house person on a higher level.
Saturn 🪐 : With this synastry, discipline and structure are blocked. The Saturn person may feel off balance and unstable when they’re with the house person. The house person might have a very fluid and mutable way of living, which is probably something the Saturn person struggles with or entirely opposes. However, with 12th house synastry, there is often a need for pleasing and acceptance from both parties. As a result, the Saturn person might bend their own rules and try to go with the house person's “flow,” but they won’t feel comfortable doing so because it creates a sense of imbalance in their life.
Neptune 🧜🏼️ : This placement is quite tricky and can be confusing. Neptune, the planet of dreams and illusions, falls in the 12th house, which can block a clear sense of reality. The Neptune person might find their ability to perceive the house person’s true nature clouded, leading to misunderstandings or unrealistic expectations. The house person may feel like their true self is hidden or misunderstood, and the Neptune person could struggle with setting clear boundaries or distinguishing between fantasy and reality. This can create a foggy dynamic where both parties have a hard time grasping the other’s true intentions and feelings.
Pluto ⚡️: This placement can be intense and transformative, but it also comes with its hurdles. Pluto is all about transformation and power, and in the 12th house, it blocks the ability to fully experience or enact personal change. The Pluto person may find it difficult to navigate deep transformations within the relationship, leading to feelings of being stuck or unable to evolve. This can manifest as unresolved issues or hidden power struggles. The house person might struggle to understand or support the Pluto person's need for transformation, leading to a dynamic where growth feels obstructed and hidden tensions simmer beneath the surface.
Uranus 🛸 : This placement brings a unique set of challenges. Uranus represents uniqueness and innovation, but when it falls in the 12th house, it blocks the ability to fully express or embrace individuality. The Uranus person might feel stifled or unable to showcase their unique qualities in the relationship, leading to feelings of frustration or alienation. They might struggle with feeling accepted for who they truly are, and their innovative ideas or unconventional traits could be suppressed. This can cause the Uranus person to feel disconnected from the house person, who may not fully appreciate or understand their uniqueness.

Case Study: The Asian Flu
Subjects: Ethan (27, white, dark brown hair) and Liam (28, white, blonde hair), both wealthy twinks.
Exposure: Contracted the Asian Flu while vacationing together at an exclusive resort with a communal pool.
Incubation Period: Approximately 1 day.
Pre-Transformation Appearance:

Symptoms & Progression:
Hour 0-6:
Ethan complained of mild fatigue. Liam felt slightly flushed.
Both developed a light sheen of sweat, more than usual in the warm weather.
Hour 12:
Ethan and Liam started feeling rejuvenated but with increased body heat.
They decided to hit the resort's gym before dinner, an unusual choice for them.
Hour 18:
In the locker room, Ethan noticed his muscles starting to swell. Liam's skin tone began to subtly change.
Both men experienced a sudden surge in confidence and outgoingness, striking up conversations with other male guests.
In mere minutes, Ethan and Liam transformed into brawny, hung Asian gym rats before the wide-eyed stares of onlookers. Their personality shifts were even more striking: outgoing, cocky, and utterly shameless in their flirtations. The 2 newly minted bros took this as a green light to fondle and tease every man in sight, driven by an insatiable urge to spread their "blessings".
Post-Transformation Appearance:
New Behaviour & Effects:
Ethan and Liam started flirting aggressively with other men, their newfound charisma making them magnets for attention.
They flexed and showed off their bodies at every opportunity, seemingly compelled to spread the virus through close contact.
Both men exhibited heightened sexual arousal and a strong, musky scent wafting from their sweat, a likely carrier of the Asian Flu.
The Asian Flu's random and varied effects on victims continue to baffle scientists, as seen in this case study. The high transmissibility rate among males in close proximity suggests social gatherings may inadvertently act as breeding grounds for the virus. Efforts to understand and treat it are ongoing.
Virus Spread:
Ethan and Liam's outgoing behavior led them to "accidentally" brush up against numerous male guests throughout the evening.
By the next morning, several other men at the resort had begun showing early symptoms of the Asian Flu. Ethan and Liam remained oblivious to their role in its spread.
Despite frantic efforts to quarantine and study affected individuals, the Asian Flu's unpredictable incubation period thwarts containment attempts. Some victims transform instantaneously while others take days.
As authorities scramble for a cure, one thing is clear: the world will never be the same now that an army of insatiable, muscle-bound Asian hotties roams free, intent on spreading their "love" far and wide. Stay safe out there - and maybe invest in some quality earplugs, those locker room grunts won't muffle themselves!

Types of Black People to Avoid From a Garveyite Perspective
Marcus Garvey’s teachings emphasize Pan-Africanism, self-reliance, and pride in African heritage. From his perspective, certain mindsets and behaviours among Black people hinder the collective progress of the race. This post outlines the types of individuals Garvey warned against and why their actions conflict with his philosophy.
1. The Self-Hating Negro
Those who lack pride in their African identity or seek to align with oppressive systems instead of embracing their heritage.
2. The Betrayer or Opportunist
People who align with colonial or imperial powers for personal gain, selling out their community in the process.
3. The Idle and Unproductive
Garvey emphasized hard work and self-reliance. Those who perpetuate laziness or refuse to contribute to the community weaken.
4. The Divisive
Individuals who sow discord or prioritize personal grievances over unity.
5. The Apologist for Oppression
Those who excuse or justify racism, colonialism, or exploitation instead of resisting it.
6. The Lackey or "House Negro"
People who serve as tools of oppression within the Black community, often working to uphold systems of exploitation.
7. The Disconnected
Those who neglect the struggles of their brothers and sisters across the African diaspora.
8. The Cynic or Defeatist
Individuals who spread hopelessness and believe liberation is impossible, stifling collective progress.
9. The Assimilationist
Those who reject African culture to assimilate into white-dominated societies, often seeking validation from oppressors.
10. The Colonial-Minded Intellectual
Educated individuals who use their knowledge to support colonial ideologies rather than fight for Black liberation.
11. The Non-Believer in Black Institutions
People who doubt the ability of Black people to build and sustain their own schools, businesses, and organizations.
12. The Religious Misleader
Religious figures who preach passivity and submission rather than encouraging active resistance and empowerment.
13. The Consumer Over Creator
Those who consume from exploitative systems but fail to support Black-owned businesses or initiatives.
14. The Envy-Driven
Individuals who sabotage others out of jealousy rather than celebrate their success as a win for the community.
15. The Perpetual Victim
Garvey believed in resilience and empowerment, not adopting a victim mindset that leads to inaction.
16. The Uninformed or Ignorant
People who refuse to educate themselves on African history, culture, or the realities of systemic oppression.
17. The Political Sellout
Politicians or leaders who prioritize personal power over the well-being of their people.
18. The Violent Toward Their Own
Garvey emphasized unity. Those who harm or exploit their own people weaken the community.
19. The Materialistic
Individuals who prioritize wealth and status over collective liberation.
20. The Fearful or Complacent
Those who fear challenging systems of oppression or accept the status quo.
21. The "Divide and Conquer" Advocate
People who promote tribalism, colourism, or internal divisions that undermine unity.
22. The Global Isolationist
Garvey believed in global solidarity. Ignoring the struggles of Africans worldwide weakens the movement.
23. The Culturally Oblivious
Individuals who neglect the preservation of African culture, language, and traditions.
24. The Misguided Activist
Those who harm liberation movements through counterproductive or extreme methods.
25. The Short-Term Thinker
People who focus on immediate gains without considering the long-term impact on future generations.
26. The Hypercritical Without Action
Critics who offer no solutions or refuse to contribute to progress.
27. The Neglectful Parent
Parents who fail to instill pride, education, and self-reliance in their children.
28. The Exploiter or Disrespecter of Black Women
Garvey emphasized the importance of both men and women in building a strong and self-reliant community. Those who exploit or disrespect Black women cause deep harm to the entire movement.
29. The Perpetrator and Promoter of Negative Stereotypes of Black Men and Women
Those who perpetuate negative stereotypes harm the collective image and self-esteem of Black people.
Examples of Harmful Stereotypes:
Stereotypes About Black Men: Promoting images of Black men as inherently violent, hypersexual, lazy, or criminal. These narratives contribute to societal discrimination and the dehumanization of Black men.
Stereotypes About Black Women: Reinforcing depictions of Black women as angry, overbearing, promiscuous, or unworthy of respect. These stereotypes undermine the dignity of Black women and lead to real-world harm.
Why This Conflicts with Garveyism:
Garvey called for the upliftment of the entire race, which includes challenging racist caricatures and media portrayals. Promoting stereotypes reinforces systemic oppression, fosters self-hatred, and fractures community unity.
"We must canonize our own heroes, create our own martyrs, and glorify our own symbols," Garvey said, urging Black people to celebrate their greatness instead of internalizing harmful narratives.
30. The Doubter of Pan-Africanism
Rejecting the idea of a unified global African identity weakens collective strength.
31. The Glorifier of Interracial Relationships Over Their Own Race
Individuals who prioritize dating outside their race, often due to internalized racism or disdain for their own community, undermine racial solidarity and family structures.
32. The Denier of African Heritage
Those who reject their African roots or refuse to identify as part of the African diaspora, fostering division and rejecting the foundation of Pan-Africanism.
33. The Disrespecter of Black Men and Boys
Individuals who belittle, demean, or fail to support Black men and boys contribute to the weakening of the community.
34. The Uninformed or Ignorant
Garvey strongly believed in education and the power of knowledge. Black people who remain ignorant about their history, culture, and the systems that oppress them harm the movement.
Why This Conflicts with Garveyism:
Ignorance weakens collective strength by promoting misunderstanding, inaction, and misplaced priorities. Education is a tool for liberation, and those who refuse to seek knowledge risk falling prey to manipulation and exploitation.
35. The Believer in Pseudo Subjects and History
Garvey valued accurate knowledge and warned against false ideologies or distorted versions of history.
Examples of Pseudo Subjects:
False Histories: Believing in fabricated or distorted versions of African history that lack historical evidence.
Pseudo-Sciences: Embracing unscientific or baseless theories about health, biology, or spirituality.
Why This Conflicts with Garveyism:
Pseudo subjects distract from the real work of liberation, confuse the community, and undermine credibility. Garvey’s philosophy calls for rooting oneself in truth and using knowledge as a foundation for empowerment
In Garvey's Words:
"A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots."
Garvey’s philosophy urges us to avoid behaviors and attitudes that undermine the pride, unity, and collective progress of Black people globally. Embracing our heritage, building strong communities, and fostering solidarity across the diaspora are key to liberation.

What is a groupie?

Some of you may have curiously noticed that odd second word in my blog title. If you are not familiar with the rock music scene of the 1960s-1990s, you might not know its meaning.
Allow me to tell you a beautiful tale of music, love, pychedelia and hazy freedom in the air which golden memory still fiercely echoes to the present day.
It all began in the 1960s, when all of a sudden the social wind started moving fast away from the rigid rules of the decades prior: Baby Boomers, most of whom were born in complete poverty during World War II and grew up under the strictness of an unfullfilling capitalistic and patriarcal way of life, caught a sudden collective feeling of revolution.
Driven by the discovery of psychedelics, which in turn inspired an entire new world of art and the sweet, raunchy sound of psych rock ‘n’ roll, youngsters were now gathering in masses, participating in love-ins, moving to communes, leaving their past materialistic lives far behind.
In the haste of a world spinning recklessly towards the side of progression, which only rule was to love all, love vast and love freely, for the very first time women and girls felt like they could give thanks to the artists and musicians who were the voice of a new liberated generation in a radical and empowering way.
In the words of Groupie Queen Pamela Des Barres,
“A groupie is just a music-loving muse. It's a give-and-take with a musician and the ladies who love them, or boys who love them, and it's all one big happy connection. It's inspiring them to be great, they inspire us to be great. It's a real, beautiful, life-affirming thing.”

Being a groupie was all about self-confidence, sexual liberation, show-stopping fashion, choosing to do what you like (or who you like) and carrying love with you wherever you went. No, it wasn't only about the sex— it was being a muse in a modern and feminist way and giving back to the artists that made the whole world shine for you, it was about inspiring those who had inspired you, exchanging love and electrifying moments with the people you admired, and just having a bloody good time, free as a bird, within the context of the glorious fever dream that was the 1960s.
Some groupies were so popular within the rock scene that they became famous themselves. These music loving it-girls had a particular charm, an aura, a presence intrinsic to them, their wild spirit clearly visible within their bright, glossy eyes, often making them even more interesting than the musicians they romanced. The most famous names in groupiedom include:
Pamela Des Barres
Cynthia Plaster Caster
Bebe Buell
Anita Pallenberg
Tawny Kitaen
Nancy Spungen
Chris O'Dell
Roxana Shirazi
Audrey Hamilton
Morgana Welch
Many other girls of rock were mentioned in the countless works of famous and underground musicians, which immortalised their importance as relentless inspirations for the art. We all know love is what makes the world turn ‘round, right?
The groupie tradition carried on proudly throughout the 1970s and the 1980s, when the rebellious and debaucherous rock scene slowly started becoming a parody of what it once was, until the grunge subculture ultimately redefinied what was cool and uncool, sweeping away any traces of what in the 90s was considered demeaning to women.
But was it?
There's much to say about the controversial figure of the groupie and how it inevitably clashes with the blatant misogyny of the time when it was at its peak. Being a muse is not a bad thing, and the only reason why the majority were female is because the music industry was widely dominated by straight males— mind you, it still is, even though by a lesser extent.
Being a groupie in the 1960s went hand in hand with the decade's newly found sexual liberation and the second wave of feminism. It was a direct expression of free love, a way to engage in the counterculture, it was a fierce, radical choice, a clear assertion of female power and what ultimately felt most natural to the people involved, which was to be aligned with and unashamed of one's sexual desires.
It's this spirit, this pure, anapologetic essence that I want to highlight in my work as a writer and entrepreneur. I chose a controversial name for my business specifically catering to women because women's history is controversial and women's artistic expression and voice have been silenced for centuries, just like the groupies' story remained unacknowledged and untold for decades, until one of them decided to speak up.
Thanks to the work of author Pamela Des Barres starting with her 1987 memoir I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie and culminating with her presence on social media celebrating the role and importance of her community, there has been a change in public perspective of how the role of a groupie concerning the arts is viewed.
The groupie community nowadays, consisting of female and male music fans, insists on its inherent relevance to feminist issues, and it's a mere declaration of love for art and the human experience.
If you want to further your knowledge about groupiedom, here is a playlist designed to reawaken its deepest, most passionate sentiment— including what groupies used to listen to on their record player while getting ready for a wild night out with their favourite girlfriends and rockstars!
